Port of Florence, AL & Tennessee Southern Railroad Announce Extended Lease and New Cargo Handling Capabilities
April 19, 2007
The Florence–Lauderdale County Port Authority said today it has extended its lease with the Tennessee Southern Railroad, operators of the Port. To bring new business to the port, the railroad recently completed construction of a new facility there to transload cargo containers from rail cars to trucks.
The Tennessee Southern Railroad is a wholly owned subsidiary of Patriot Rail Corp. of Boca Raton, Florida, a freight railroad holding company.
The busy 50-acre Port of Florence is a multi-modal facility on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama. The Tennessee Southern Railroad conducts barge, rail and truck operations and a 100,000-square-foot warehouse at the Port, according to Jim Loew, Port Director of the Florence-Lauderdale County Port Authority.
Loew said the extension also adds four acres for industrial development to the 9.5 acres the railroad already leases for its operations.
Last year The Port of Florence handled over 200 barges accounting for over 300,000 tons of cargo. The Port principally handles coiled steel, aluminum ingots, railroad ties and various aggregates.
“We are happy to be expanding our partnership with Tennessee Southern,” said Loew. “The Port is a vital full-service link for northwest Alabama and South Central Tennessee to all major U.S. ports to the south. This significant expansion opens the way for new customers to use our facilities.”
“The Port of Florence is a unique transportation asset in a growing region,” said Stan Wlotko, Tennessee Southern Senior Vice President of Operations. “Our ability to now handle containers represents a potential growth area for the port. We will continue to work with the Authority to expand our operations by adding new transportation solutions for current customers as well as partner with them to seek new users for this active facility.”
